Charlie Sheen’s outbursts may seem funny to some, but looking closely at what Sheen is saying and doing, it looks like Sheen is suffering from mania, a symptom of bipolar disorder. No one should be making fun of someone with a mental illness.

Psychiatric labels such as bipolar disorder, ADHD, ADD, Social Anxiety Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder are not diseases discovered in labs, they are invented in committee by a show of hands of the American Psychiatric Association. And it is these labels, this practice of pathologizing behaviors into “diseases” that are literally voted into existence by the American Psychiatric Association, that fuel the $80 billion dollar psychiatric drug industry that puts profit over patient’s lives.

Above Can Serrat, in the flooded riverbed coming down from Montserrat. The flotsam and jetsam resembled the inside of my head – lots of garbage, also lots of treasures hanging upside down at funny angles. First time with a tripod – had some happy accidents. The manic phase of Bipolar I Disorder is often misdiagnosed as Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). Bipolar patients in the manic phase exhibit many of the signs and symptoms of pathological narcissism – hyperactivity, self-centeredness, lack of empathy, and control freakery. During this recurring chapter of the disease, the patient is euphoric, has grandiose fantasies, spins unrealistic schemes, and has frequent rage attacks (is irritable) if her or his wishes and plans are (inevitably) frustrated.
