I saw the term in a psychology book once. It is a side effect of taking medicines for mental disorders that cause involuntary muscle spasms due to the medication. What are they called? What is the medical term?
"Tardive symptoms" or Tardive Diskenesia associated with phenothiazine anti-psychotic medications. Generically also referred to as an iatrogenic disorder, one caused by treatment. Full-blown, it resembles Huntington’s Chorea, with facial grimmacing, spasmic twisting of the extremities, and drooling. It may be masked by continuing or increased dosage of the medication.
I want to work with children/teenagers with mental disorders and substance abuse problems. I am not sure what degrees to really be looking at though. I am going to start nursing classes this September but am not sure what other classes to look at for this.
You want to start with a degree in psychology. In order to practice as a therapist you need a license in social work, psychology or in some states they have this professional counselor designation. All of which require a Masters. To be an AOD professional (Alcohol and Drug), you don’t need a masters degree, there are certification programs at colleges that you can get to do this. If you are going to nursing classes this is a completely different field and rather costly to do nursing and psychology but if you have the money, than do both. I would start with a bachelor’s in psychology or social work though. Once you begin the bachelor’s program in one of those two areas, the field will open up for you and you will get the rest of your answers. It really doesn’t matter what you want your specialty to be until you go for your graduate degree.

Psychiatric labels such as bipolar disorder, ADHD, ADD, Social Anxiety Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder are not diseases discovered in labs, they are invented in committee by a show of hands of the American Psychiatric Association. Ashley D. first got ill in 2003 or 2004. She was prescribed medications that she experienced severe side effects from. When Ashley brought up her issues and concerns with her Doctor, she was told that this was normal and that she had nothing to worry about. As time went on, the issues, side effects and mental illness became more severe, and she was eventually admitted into the psych ward. Ashley was kept in the hospital for 3 and half months, where she was put on medication after medication, all with no success. The side effects got so bad from the high amount of psych meds that her kidneys and liver began to shut down and she almost died, all while being in the psychiatric institution. Ashley felt that the drugs sucked all life and hope out of her, and as a result it made her suicidal. While she was in the psych ward she was told that she would never be normal, function in society, go back to school, drive a car or have a job.
Ashley’s Dad was not impressed and quite concerned with the treatment that she was receiving while in the psych ward.
