I’m doing a research paper on anxiety disorders. I came across cognitive behavior therapy as a way to help cure the disorder.
However, I’m only in 9th grade. So any research I do on cognitive behavior therapy gives me info thats really in depth. Can someone "dumb it down" a little so I have a better understanding of what it is and how it works?

10pts to best answer!
Basically it’s like this:
People’s behaviour, thoughts and feelings are all related. Imagine a triangle with thoughts, feelings and behaviours at each point. The theory is that affecting one or more of these will affect the others. That’s what CBT aims to do.
So lets say someone has anxiety about going outside:
• the feelings may be fear, nausea, worry.
• the thoughts may be ‘people will look at me’ or ‘I’ll have a panic attack’
• the behaviours may be avoidance, or performing rituals that reduce the anxiety.
So CBT would aim to change the thought processes (cognitive) and the behaviours. The therapist might advise you start going outside in small doses. Or challenge the thoughts that people will be looking at you. They might set homework tasks like gradual exposure to the thing that’s causing anxiety. Or try to find out why the thoughts came about.
It’s quite an in-depth therapy that requires a lot of dedication on the part of the person undergoing it, which is one of the down-falls. But it’s also the most effective treatment for most mental illnesses.

I’m doing a report on this and I can’t seem to understand it at all. I already made the powerpoint and all that but when I read it, I can’t explain every line of it. The professor is already pissed at me.
My understanding, in summary, is that cognitive behavior therapy is more centered on taking action, or using specific behavior or behaviors, to help people get over certain psychological problems, like phobias, whereas rational emotive behavior therapy is more of a philosophy and is centered on using one’s rationale to influence one’s emotions, which in turn will influence one’s between.
In other words, a cognitive behavioral therapist might have a patient DO certain things to get over a phobia, whereas a rational emotive behavior therapist might use logic to argue/discuss a patient out of a certain belief.

I’ll be back with more hints to self-healing.
This information comes from Dr. MARCIA LINEHAN from Seattle, Washington, USA.
She is a psychologist – the guru of DBT. I used the format her book entitled “Skills Tr5aining Manual Treating Borderline Personality Disorder
although it entitled Borderline, I still think it all relates to Bipolar as well. It’s Coping Skills. And we need to find a way to cope.
enjoy!

I have anxiety, and I want it gone! COMPLETELY! I want my damn life back so I’m open to all suggestions. I wouldn’t mind becoming friends with a few people whom have learned to conquer theirs. I just need help and people who actually understand.
yes CBT is the best treatment for anxiety. There are lots of different types of anxiety, so the treatment will vary, depending on whether you have a more generalized sort of anxiety versus a phobia, social anxiety, panic disorder, or post traumatic stress disorder. The first step would be to see a therapist to get a proper diagnosis. Medication can help in the short-term for some types of anxiety. Exposure is the best treatment for anxiety. Learning relaxation skills and changing your thought patterns is what CBT would teach you. If you have insurance, you may want to seek therapy to help you to learn CBT skills. You could also purchase a workbook, such as The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook, but it will depend on which type of anxiety you have.
